A SILVER AND NIELLO BOX, ENGLAND, SHEFFIELD, LATE 19TH CENTURY, PROBABLY BY MAXFIELD & SONS - Rectangular hinged box with softly rounded corners, the exterior decorated overall in fine niello work on a deep blue-black ground with dense geometric diaper patterning. The lid centered by an oval reserve engraved with a crowned interlaced monogram, likely ”K W A”, set within a belt-and-buckle motif. The sides are similarly decorated, the base plain. Hinged lid opening to a gilt interior. The interior stamped with the maker’s mark ”M&S”, consistent in form and placement with the mark used by Maxfield & Sons of Sheffield in the late 19th century.
