Bidspirit auction | A EUROPEAN SILVER LIDDED BOX,
A EUROPEAN SILVER LIDDED BOX, 19TH CENTURY - Of oval form, the hinged lid repoussé and chased with a figural pastoral scene depicting three putti engaged with a horned goat in a landscape setting, framed by a finely worked rope-and-scroll border. The sides are richly decorated with continuous rococo-style scrollwork and foliate motifs, centered on oval cartouches to the front and back, the lower rim similarly finished with engraved ornament. The interior retains traces of gilt wash, and the underside bears indistinct European silver marks, consistent with Continental manufacture. The box exemplifies 19th-century European silverwork inspired by earlier Baroque and Rococo models, combining playful figural imagery with skillful repoussé and engraving. Weight: 10.7 oz. (302 g.)
