Bidspirit auction | A PAIR OF AUSTRIAN BRONZE
A PAIR OF AUSTRIAN BRONZE ART DECO BOOK ENDS, VIENNA, CIRCA 1925–1935 - Each cast as a stylized standing nude figure with elongated proportions and simplified geometric modeling, the figures were rendered in a restrained modernist idiom characteristic of Viennese Art Deco sculpture. The bodies are shown in a subtle contrapposto stance, arms held close to the sides, with smooth, abstracted facial features and an emphasis on verticality and rhythm. Each figure is cast in bronze with a dark brown to nearly black patina and mounted on an integral round rectangular plinth forming the book end base. The reverse of the bases is flat, designed to support books, and one example bears a stamped Austrian origin mark to the underside, reading ”MADE IN AUSTRIA”, confirming period export production. The pair reflects the influence of early modernist sculpture and Wiener Werkstätte aesthetics, intended as both functional objects and sculptural décor. Please make all inquiries before bidding.
