Bidspirit auction | A FRENCH GILT-BRONZE LIDDED CENTERPIECE
A FRENCH GILT-BRONZE LIDDED CENTERPIECE WITH FIGURAL FINIAL OF ST. GEORGE, CIRCA 1880 - Cast and richly modeled as a monumental lidded tazza-form centerpiece, the deep bowl is finely chased with dense scrolling foliage, strapwork, and floral ornament, fitted with four applied figural mounts cast as seated and hanging putti grasping the rim. The cover is similarly ornamented with concentric bands of relief decoration and surmounted by a finely cast miniature figure of Saint George in medieval armor, shown brandishing a sword while subduing the dragon beneath his feet. The stem is formed with opposing winged putti supporting a central baluster, descending to a stepped circular foot decorated with scrolling relief and mounted on a later blackened circular base. The entire surface retains extensive original gilding with areas of intentional contrast and age-related wear, enhancing the sculptural depth and definition. French work of the late 19th century, executed in the historicist Renaissance Revival taste popular during the Third Republic. Please make all inquiries before bidding.
