A GRAND TOUR BRONZE OF A WOMAN SEATED ON A LION, CONTINENTAL, LATE 19TH CENTURY - A Grand Tour–period bronze depicting a partially draped classical female figure seated side-saddle upon a lion. The woman is modeled nude to the waist, her head turned to the side, with one arm resting naturally across the lion’s mane. The lion is rendered in a stylized, somewhat archaic manner typical of late 19th-century tourist bronzes inspired by ancient Roman prototypes. The surface retains traces of original parcel gilding with areas of warm patination from age and handling. The group is mounted on a rectangular red marble base with natural veining. Grand Tour bronzes of this scale were widely produced in Italy and France during the late 19th century for travelers visiting classical sites, imitating antiquities and mythological subjects.
