Bidspirit auction | A PAIR OF GILT-BRONZE FRENCH
A PAIR OF GILT-BRONZE FRENCH CANDLESTICKS WITH CUPIDS, 19TH CENTURY - A pair of gilt-bronze French candlesticks with cupids, France, 19th century. Each candlestick is cast and gilt in bronze with a circular drip pan above a baluster-form stem, the central section of each stem cast as a full-length standing figure of a cupid, modeled in the round with defined musculature and expressive pose. The upper and lower sections of the stems are enriched with classical moldings and beaded accents, terminating in stepped, lobed bases decorated with scrolling foliate ornament in low relief. The contrast between the matte patina in recessed areas and the surviving burnished gilding emphasizes the sculptural quality of the figural elements. Please make all inquiries before bidding.
