A BRONZE AFTER ANTONIO CANOVA (1757-1822), 'CREUGAS OF EPIDAMNUS', 19TH CEN. - A fine grand-tour bronze reproduction of the famous marble sculpture of boxer Creugas of Epidamnus originally designed in marble by the Italian sculptor Antonio Canova (1757-1822). The original is displayed in the Vatican museum alongside its pair, Damoxenus of Syracuse. The two men depicted were boxers, and the scene is that of their fateful competition described by Pausanius in which Damoxenus delivers a blow between the ribs of Creugas, piercing his abdomen and ripping out his intestines.
