A GERMAN FIRE BRIGADE LEATHER HELMET (FEUERWEHR LEDERHELM), GERMANY, PRE-WORLD WAR II - A traditional firefighter helmet form with a blackened leather skull constructed in multiple stitched sections, fitted with a metal-bound front visor and an extended rear neck guard edged in nickel-plated steel. The crown is mounted with a raised metal comb of elongated form, characteristic of German Feuerwehr helmets of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The front was applied with a metal shield plate bearing the letter ”B, ” denoting a regional or municipal fire brigade designation rather than military issue. The helmet is fitted with scalloped metal chin scales secured by side rosettes. The interior retains its original leather liner with finger segments and a drawstring, mounted to a metal liner band, and bearing remnants of a period paper maker or depot label dated 1914. Metal fixtures with some small dents and light oxidation as well as minor scratches throughout. The rim of the visor is separated. The interior leather is dried and cracked but mostly present. The metal fixtures of the chin straps are fully intact with some minor loss to the leather.
