A RARE RENAISSANCE GILT SHAFFRON, HORSE ARMOR, BARDING, 16TH CENTURY - An extremely rare Renaissance era gilt half-shaffron comprised of two sections; the face with a large floret at center from which protrudes a slender pyramidal spike of gilt-iron; and the rear which is flared to protect the back of the skull. The trim of the eye sockets and front of the shaffron, as well as the ears and neck-guard, are all brightly gilt and chased with zoomorphic, armorial, and foliate motifs, all with a chased border appearing as cording. The face and floret are both decorated with many hemi-spherical brass studs, and the ears are beveled, and slightly recurved in shape. Please make all inquiries before bidding. Dimensions: L: 17 1/2 in., (44.5 cm.) Condition: Very good for its age, with some minor loss to gilding and expected pitting across surface. Some minor loss to metal in places. Retains its central rondel and spike. Lames of neck still articulate.
