AN UNUSUAL GERMAN GAMEKEEPER'S BAYONET HUNTING DAGGER COMBO, 19TH CENTURY - A rare and unusual German edged weapon combining characteristics of a military bayonet and a civilian hunting or side dagger. The hilt of this dagger is of chased and molded steel with intricate depictions of women's faces framed by braided and looped hair, one face at the center of the clamshell guard and the others at the ends of the quillons. The long blade, ending in a spear-point tip, is free of decoration, and is engraved at its base with a partially obscured maker's mark which shows the letters 'I. C. ST...' and 'GOPP...', probably indicating the German city of Goppingen. The scabbard is of black leather affixed with steel mounts. Germany, 19th century. Please make all inquiries before bidding. Scabbard leather dry with cracking across its surface. Metal fixtures of scabbard with pitting throughout, well attached to leather.
