A EUROPEAN ROMANTIC DAGGER WITH SCULPTURAL HILT AND SHEATH, 19TH CEN. - A European romantic silver-mounted dagger decorated across every surface of its hilt and sheath with neoclassical motifs. The grip with armor reminiscent of Ancient Greece, flanked by halberds. The sheath is decorated on one side with a gorgon, possibly Medusa herself, with an intricate weave of snakes draping from her frazzled hair. Acanthus leaves act as the quillons of the dagger's guard. The blade itself is of a very simple triangular construction, the focal point of the piece being the chased and sculpted designs of the hilt and scabbard. Europe, 19th century.
