AN INDO-PERSIAN PESH-KABZ WOOTZ DAGGER WITH BONE GRIP, CASED, C. 19TH CEN. - An Indo-Persian pesh-kabz dagger with a stunning wootz blade, its patterning highly visible. The blade is decorated with beautiful, brightly gilt, naturalistic scenes depicting birds fluttering amongst twisting vines and flowers. The tang is delicately engraved with similar floral patterning, and the guard shows two birds. Each side of the tang is affixed with a grip scale of carved bone. The pommel is affixed with a decorative metal ring from which one could hang a lanyard or some other textile or chain. The piece is kept in an old wooden case with cloth lining, the exact age of which is unknown. Indo-Persia, 19th century. Please make all inquiries before bidding. Dimensions: L: 14 in., (35.6 cm.) Condition: Blade in very good condition for age, with minimal pitting and brilliant wootz patterning. Gilding rubbed in places, with some loss throughout, particularly along the tang. Much of the fabric lining of the case is gone, exposing the wooden core. Hinges function well. One clasp on case is missing.
