ATTRIBUTED TO FERDINAND HODLER (SWISS, 1853–1918) SEASCAPE - Oil on board. A small atmospheric coastal view depicting a dark, rocky shoreline at left, overlooking a restless body of water, rendered in layered strokes of turquoise, green, and deep blue. The water surface is animated with short horizontal strokes of white highlights, suggesting breaking waves and reflected light. The foreground rocks dissolve into a broad expanse of shimmering water painted with expressive, rhythmic brushwork. The composition emphasizes tonal contrasts between the dark landmass and the luminous surface of the sea, a treatment of the landscape that recalls the simplified, atmospheric approach associated with the late-nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century Swiss painter Ferdinand Hodler. The work is executed with energetic impasto and visible brushwork across the surface, creating a textured field of color and movement. Such abbreviated coastal studies are consistent with small plein-air panels produced by artists working in the Alpine and Lake Geneva region during the late nineteenth century. The reverse shows an old backing board secured with small tacks within a wooden frame. The frame has small losses and wear to the gilded surface.
