A MIXED-MEDIA ”ABSTRACT” PAINTING BY VAGRICH BAKHCHANYAN, CA. 1960 - Mixed media and watercolor on paper, signed in Cyrillic lower left Бахчаньян (Bakhchanyan). Framed. A vibrant early abstract work by the conceptual artist and satirist Vagrich Bakhchanyan, executed in the 1960s before he emigrated from the USSR. The composition features spontaneous splashes of color and gestural stains forming a semi-figurative central image, suggestive of the artist’s interest in psychological portraiture and subconscious imagery. This piece reflects the transitional phase in Bakhchanyan’s career between Surrealist experimentation and the text-based conceptual works for which he became known later in New York.
