A RUSSIAN AMERICAN PAINTED PORCELAIN PLATE BY NINA BALABAN - A RUSSIAN AMERICAN PAINTED PORCELAIN PLATE, SIGNED NINA BALABAN. Circular porcelain plate, produced by Crooksville China Co. (marked underside ”CROOKSVILLE CHINA CO., 1233, American Made”), later decorated in enamel paints by the Russian-American artist Nina Balaban (20th c.). The composition depicts four stylized women in flowing black dresses with red accents, posed as dancers on a stage framed by curtains, rendered in bold modernist strokes with textured dot backgrounds in orange, brown, and grey. The plate is signed in English to the lower right, Nina Balaban. Balaban was active as a painter and ceramic decorator among the Russian émigré artistic community in the United States, incorporating themes of performance, theater, and Slavic folk identity into her works. This example illustrates the post-war tradition of Russian-American decorative art, in which standard American porcelain blanks were transformed into unique, hand-painted works by émigré artists.
