AN ERNST WAHLISS VIENNA PORCELAIN ART NOUVEAU STYLE VASE, C. 1900 - A finely crafted porcelain vase produced by the Ernst Wahliss firm of Vienna, Austria. The vase is of a slender form with a widened belly in a textured eggshell color, the flared ends being decorated with green leafy branches and black flowers with contrasting gilt trim. The mouth, base, and 4 handles are all brightly gilt as well. The underside of the piece is marked with the Ernst Wahliss Vienna stamp and 'Made in Vienna'. Ernst Wahliss (1837–1900) was an important Austrian ceramicist renowned for his exquisite works which graces the homes of the European elite of the 19th century. After his passing, the firm was taken over by his sons, remaining within the family until 1921 when they were bought by Porzellanfabrik Union AG after a period of trouble spurred on by WW1, their doors closing permanently in 1929.
