A MINTON MAJOLICA GAME PIE DISH AND COVER, ENGLAND, CIRCA 1870 - Of oval form, molded in the form of a wickerwork basket with side handles, the cover modeled in high relief with a hare and game birds amidst oak leaves and branches, the whole glazed in a pale ochre yellow. The base impressed MINTON, date cypher, and model number. Note: Minton’s naturalistic majolica of the mid-19th century is among the most celebrated examples of Victorian ceramics. Game pie dishes, often molded with hares and birds on the cover, were a popular form reflecting country pursuits and dining fashions of the period. Comparable examples are held in the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, and have appeared in leading ceramics sales at Sotheby’s and Bonhams. Please make all inquiries before bidding.
