AN ENGLISH MAJOLICA CHESTNUT-FORM BOWL, LATE 19TH CENTURY - Of oval form, the scalloped rim and pedestal foot enriched with green foliate borders, the bowl interior and underside glazed in turquoise. The exterior is modeled with large green leaves, chestnuts, and flowers in high relief, naturalistically glazed in shades of green, brown, and ochre, with a turquoise interior. The base has an impressed model number and traces of a painted decorator’s mark. The chestnut-leaf motif was a popular subject in English Majolica during the late Victorian period. Minton first introduced such naturalistic ware in the 1850s, inspiring competitors like George Jones, Wedgwood, and Holdcroft to produce similar relief-molded examples.
