A FRENCH BRONZE, NUDE ODALISQUE, BARON CHARLES ARTHUR BOURGEOIS (1838-1886), 19TH CENTURY - An Orientalist bronze nude of an Odalisque with a pitcher, by the French sculptor Baron Charles Arthur Bourgeois (1838-1886), a prominent artist of the 19th century and winner of the Prix de Rome in 1863. The piece is signed 'A Bourgeois' on the base. The nude woman is dressed typically for a Western idea of an Ottoman concubine, with bangles around her ankles, no top, and plenty of brightly gilt jewelry. Odalisques (deriving from the Turkish term Odalik, for a chambermaid) were a popular motif in 19th century France. Paris, France, 19th century. Please make all inquiries before bidding.
