A BRONZE EQUESTRIAN FIGURE OF MARCUS AURELIUS, GRAND TOUR STYLE, LATE 19TH CENTURY - The bronze figure depicting the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius, modeled after the celebrated antique equestrian statue in Rome, is shown wearing classical drapery and seated on a walking horse, with one foreleg raised. The composition is modeled after the Capitoline Antique, with a dark brown patina, raised on a rectangular marble plinth and a black base, the underside showing mounting bolts visible. Such reductions were produced in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as Grand Tour models after the famous ancient Roman bronze of Marcus Aurelius on the Capitoline Hill, Rome, one of the most celebrated surviving equestrian sculptures of antiquity and widely reproduced for the European tourist market.
