Bidspirit auction | A PAIR OF PATINATED SPELTER
A PAIR OF PATINATED SPELTER FIGURAL BOOKENDS WITH EQUESTRIAN GROUPS, FRENCH, ART DECO PERIOD, CIRCA 1930 - A striking pair of Art Deco bookends cast in spelter and finished with a dark patina, each modeled as a dynamic equestrian group in high relief. The compositions depict mounted male and female classical figures riding spirited horses in opposing directions, the animals shown in mid-stride with pronounced musculature and forward motion. The riders are rendered in stylized classical attire, with simplified, geometric treatment characteristic of the Art Deco aesthetic. Each figure is integrated into a rectilinear architectural plinth, providing both structural support and visual contrast to the fluidity of the sculptural groups. The surfaces retain a rich, darkened patina with areas of natural wear exposing the underlying metal, contributing to the period character. The reverse of each base bears indistinct cast or incised markings, now largely obscured by oxidation and wear, likely including a foundry or model reference number. Condition: Overall good condition with visible surface wear, oxidation, and rubbing to the patina, particularly along edges and raised areas.
