A FRENCH BRONZE FIGURE OF DIANA THE HUNTRESS BY ALBERT-ERNEST CARRIER-BELLEUSE, 19TH CENTURY - The finely cast bronze figure depicting Diana, known in Greek mythology as Artemis, standing in contrapposto, lightly draped and holding a crossbow and hunting horn, with a quiver of arrows at her side, her foot resting upon a slain wild boar, raised on a naturalistic base with circular plinth, signed Carrier-Belleuse to the base, the surface with a rich reddish-brown patina. The model represents Diana the huntress, the Roman counterpart of the Greek goddess Artemis, associated with the hunt, wilderness, and the moon, here shown in a triumphant pose over game, combining classical mythology with the elegant naturalism characteristic of the French Second Empire and early Third Republic sculptural tradition. Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse (1824–1887) was one of the most important French sculptors of the 19th century and a teacher of Auguste Rodin, producing numerous mythological and decorative bronzes of high technical quality.
