A PAIR OF RUSSIAN SILVER SWAN-FORM CANDLESTICK HOLDERS, GOTTHARD FERDINAND STANG, ST PETERSBURG, 1809 - Each candlestick is modeled as a graceful swan resting on an elongated openwork base. The wings rise to form the stem of the candle cup, which is finely chased with overlapping feathers sothebys.com. The chased feathers continue up the cup, which has a scalloped rim. The bases are struck underneath with the maker’s initials and the 84 silver standard mark and the pair dates to 1809. Each piece measures 5½ in., (14 cm.) in height. Mark and Provenance: Signed with the initials “G.F.S.” for Gotthard Ferdinand Stang and stamped with the St Petersburg assayer’s mark for 84 zolotnik silver. The pair formed part of Sotheby’s Fabergé, Imperial & Revolutionary Art sale in November 2024. The auction listing noted that the sale had concluded on 26 November 2024. With a pre-sale estimate of £4,000 – £6,000. Gotthard Ferdinand Stang was a well‑regarded silversmith active in early 19th‑century St Petersburg. These elaborate swan‑shaped candlesticks are typical of the decorative Neoclassical style favored in imperial Russia.
