Bidspirit auction | AN ORMOLU, MALACHITE AND FROSTED

AN ORMOLU, MALACHITE AND FROSTED GLASS VASE, FRENCH, LATE 19TH CENTURY - Of highly decorative form, the vase is composed of a finely cast and richly gilded ormolu base supporting a trumpet-shaped frosted glass insert. The base is elaborately modeled as a naturalistic cluster of acanthus leaves rising upward, flanked by three fully sculpted birds perched in animated poses, their plumage rendered with notable textural detail. The gilding is of warm, matte and burnished tones, enhancing the sculptural quality of the composition. The vase is raised on a substantial circular base of polished malachite, displaying characteristic concentric banding and variegated green tones. The base is fitted with four gilt bronze feet, each finely cast and finished. The frosted glass reservoir is of flaring form with delicately engraved or acid-etched decoration of stylized foliate motifs, consistent with late 19th-century French decorative taste. The overall design reflects the influence of the Louis XV revival style, combined with naturalistic themes popular in the Napoleon III period, and relates to high-quality Parisian decorative bronze production.
