Bidspirit auction | A FRENCH SILVERED-BRONZE TRI-POD STAND
A FRENCH SILVERED-BRONZE TRI-POD STAND WITH EWER AND SERVING TRAY, 19TH CENTURY - The ensemble comprises a tall tripod stand surmounted by a circular basin and fitted with a detachable ewer, the surfaces richly cast and chased in high relief with Renaissance Revival ornament. The broad circular dish with a wide repoussé border decorated with allegorical roundels of mythological and classical figures within scrolling foliage and grotesque ornament, centered by a silvered medallion depicting a female allegory surrounded by classical attributes, inscribed ”TEMPE-RANTIA”, with the ironic meaning of temperance, considering the ewer would have been for wine. The basin is raised on a central baluster shaft issuing into three tapering legs, each terminating in finely cast sandaled feet resting on shaped platforms. The junction is mounted with parcel-gilt acanthus and floral mounts, centered by a stylized blossom. The accompanying ewer of ovoid form with flared neck and scrolling handle, lavishly decorated in relief with classical masks, putti, winged figures, and foliate scrollwork within cartouches. The lower body has further mythological and grotesque ornament above a circular foot with an egg-and-dart border. Surfaces retaining warm brown patina with contrasting gilt highlights.
