A NEOLITHIC TRIPOD EARTHENWARE VESSEL, XIAJIADIAN CULTURE, CA. 2200–1800 BCE - A gray earthenware tripod vessel of archaic form, the body tapering to three pointed supports and rising to a slightly flared rim. The vessel is executed in a coarse gray clay with a weathered surface, consistent with utilitarian and ritual ceramics associated with the Lower Xiajiadian Culture of northeastern China. The austere form reflects early Bronze Age precedents, with emphasis on stability and functional design rather than elaborate surface ornament. Such tripod vessels are among the earliest expressions of later Chinese ding-type ritual forms, bridging Neolithic ceramic traditions and subsequent bronze casting developments.
