A CLOISONNE ENAMEL CENSER, THREE-FOOTED, WITH ARABIC CALLIGRAPHIC RESERVES, CHINESE, MID 20TH CENTURY - A finely worked Chinese cloisonne enamel censer of compressed globular form, raised on three short, splayed feet and fitted with a pair of upright loop handles. The body is richly decorated in bright turquoise-blue ground with dense scrolling lotus and floral motifs rendered in multicolored enamels, including red, yellow, white, and green, all reserved within finely wired cloisonne compartments. The principal decoration consists of shaped cartouches enclosing raised Arabic calligraphic inscriptions, likely reading ”Mashallah” and possibly ”Allah, ” executed in relief against a darkened bronze ground. The juxtaposition of Islamic script with traditional Chinese decorative vocabulary reflects production for export markets or for Muslim communities within China, particularly in the 20th century. The underside bears a cast four-character mark within a square panel, likely apocryphal and in imitation of earlier reign marks, a common feature in mid-century cloisonne wares.
