A RUSSIAN GILT-SILVER AND CLOISONNE ENAMEL KOVSH BY MARIA SEMENOVA, C. 1900 WEIGHT: 1.4 O., (40 G.) - Of traditional boat-shaped form with high scrolling prow and raised handle, the body richly decorated in polychrome cloisonné enamel on a matted gilt ground. The surface displays vigorous scrolling foliate ornament and stylized blossoms in tones of cobalt blue, turquoise, pale blue, pink, white, lilac, and apple green, executed in fine wire cloison and framed by delicate ropework borders. The rim is edged with beaded wire, while the base and handle are accented with a continuous band of turquoise enamel roundels. The underside is centered with an oval medallion reserved in matte gilt, struck with maker’s mark ”МС” for Maria Semenova and standard Russian silver marks, further encircled by a band of turquoise enamel cabochon-style cells within applied wire mounts. The interior is fully gilded. Maria Semenova was among the notable Moscow workshops active at the turn of the 20th century, producing finely executed cloisonné enamel works in the neo-Russian revival style characteristic of the late Imperial period. The present kovsh demonstrates refined wirework, harmonious enamel palette, and crisp preservation of gilding, consistent with high-quality Moscow production of the circa 1895–1905 period.
