THREE LARGE CHINESE CARVED AND GILT WOOD PANELS, 19TH–EARLY 20TH CENTURY - Comprising a pair of tall rectangular panels and a narrower central panel, each deeply carved in high relief and richly gilt, depicting lively figural and architectural scenes within an openwork composition. The two larger panels are densely populated with warriors on horseback, attendants, and courtly figures arranged within tiered pavilions, bridges, and stylized garden landscapes. The carving is vigorous and dynamic, with figures shown in animated poses, some engaged in combat or procession, framed by flowering trees, rockwork, and scrolling foliage. The smaller central panel is similarly carved with a figural scene beneath a stylized tree, flanked by architectural elements and pierced ornament. The surfaces retain extensive gilding over a red lacquer ground, visible along the edges and verso, typical of Chinese decorative woodwork intended for interior architectural settings such as screens, altar surrounds, or wall panels. The openwork carving creates strong depth and shadow, enhancing the dramatic narrative quality of the scenes. The reverse of each panel shows the red lacquered ground with visible carving channels and mounting apertures, consistent with architectural use. Please make all inquiries before bidding.
