A NEOCLASSICAL ALABASTER GROUP OF SATYR AND A GOAT, 19TH CEN. - A finely carved neoclassical alabaster group depicting Saturn (Cronus) seated, attended by two lively goats. The god is shown partially draped, his muscular torso rendered with good anatomical detail, while the goats rear upward toward him in an energetic composition. The figures are arranged around a naturalistic rocky base that curves to form a recessed bowl-shaped element at the center, likely intended as a desk garniture, inkwell, or table ornament. Carved from a solid block of pale alabaster, the sculpture shows delicate modeling in the hair, beards, and fleece of the goats, with characteristic translucency of the material lending depth to the forms. A decorative and imaginative classical subject typical of the late Neoclassical/early Romantic period. Volterra or Florence, mid–19th century (ca. 1830–1870).
