AN INDIAN LACQUERED AND PAINTED WOODEN CASKET, LATE 18TH–EARLY 19TH CENTURY - A rectangular wooden casket finely decorated in Mughal or Deccan style with intricate polychrome geometric and floral motifs on a dark ground. The top features a symmetrical arrangement of interlaced star medallions within multiple borders of red, black, and gold. The sides similarly decorated with repeating foliate diaper patterns and framed cartouches. The hinged lid opens to reveal a plain interior with traces of old green paint and original iron hinges. This richly ornamented chest represents the refined craftsmanship of northern India’s decorative woodworking traditions. Such pieces were often used for storing documents, jewelry, or writing instruments and display strong Persian and Islamic geometric influence, suggesting origin in Kashmir, Sindh, or Lahore during the late 18th to early 19th century.
