Bidspirit auction | A GERMAN OR CENTRAL EUROPEAN
A GERMAN OR CENTRAL EUROPEAN SILVERED ETROG BOX WITH FIGURAL FOLIATE BASE - Of oval, melon-ribbed form, the hinged box is designed to contain an etrog for the Jewish festival of Sukkot, the surface with gently lobed gadrooning and a soft, time-worn silvered finish. The lid opens on a rear hinge and is secured by a simple push-button clasp. The vessel is mounted on an elaborate cast base modeled as overlapping naturalistic leaves, likely oak, with deeply chased veins and irregular edges, conveying a strong organic character. A branch-form handle extends to one side, issuing smaller leaves and tendrils, reinforcing the naturalistic theme and providing a functional grip. The underside and sides of the box bear small stamped marks. The construction and design are consistent with Central European Judaica silverwork of the late 19th century, particularly Austro-German production. Please make all inquiries before bidding. All lots are sold ”as-is”, refer to our T&C. Helios Auctions offers in-house shipping. In case we can not accommodate a shipping request, a list of additional shippers will be provided. Dimensions: H: 4 3/8 in., (11.1 cm.) Condition: Good overall condition. Noticeable wear to the silvered surface with areas of rubbing, oxidation, and discoloration.
