Bidspirit auction | A COBALT-GROUND PORCELAIN LIDDED OVAL

A COBALT-GROUND PORCELAIN LIDDED OVAL BOX WITH HAND-PAINTED RESERVE SEVRES-STYLE, MID 20TH CENTURY - A finely executed Sevres-style porcelain oval box of elongated form, the exterior richly decorated in a deep cobalt-blue ground highlighted with elaborate gilt scrolling foliate ornament in the Rococo taste. The hinged lid is centered with an oval reserve depicting a courting couple in 18th-century dress within a pastoral landscape, rendered in soft polychrome enamels in the manner of French cabinet painting. The scene is signed ”C. Rochette” at lower right. The interior is glazed white, with the underside of the lid featuring a delicate hand-painted floral spray. The mount is fitted with a gilt metal hinge and rim, enhancing the overall decorative effect and reflecting traditional Sevres luxury presentation wares. The underside bears a blue underglaze pseudo Sevres-style mark reading ”Made in France” and ”Hand Painted, ” accompanied by an interlaced device, indicating a 20th-century decorative production rather than an 18th-century Sevres manufactory piece.
