A RUSSIAN SILVER OPENWORK TEAGLASS HOLDER, WORKSHOP OF VASILY KARGIN, ST. PETERSBURG, RUSSIA, LATE 19TH CENTURY - The body is composed of upper and lower circular bands joined by supports and a rectangular handle, raised on three curved feet. The bands are decorated with a guilloche pattern of palmettes, reflecting a neoclassical ornamental vocabulary and fitted with a cut-glass insert. The underside is engraved with a monogram and, within, a date inscription reading ”1886 30/IX 1907”. Hallmarks struck to the upper rim and underside: 84 silver standard with kokoshnik facing left in an oval cartouche with assay master’s initials ”АР” (St. Petersburg Assay Office, 1898–1908), and maker’s mark ”В.К” in Cyrillic for Vasily Kargin in a rectangular cartouche.
