A RUSSIAN ART-NOUVEAU SILVER CREAMER, VASILY SEMENOV WORKSHOP, 19TH CEN. - A creamer jug standing on three spherical legs, with a smooth, curved handle and a triangular spout; one side is decorated with an asymmetrical engraved floral pattern forming a medallion. A monogram is engraved within the medallion. The spout, handle, and base bear hallmarks: a hallmark head in a kokoshnik facing left with the initials IL [the hallmark of the Moscow District Assay Office with the initials of the district director, Ivan Sergeyevich Lebedkin, appointed in 1899] and the maker’s mark in Cyrillic in a round shield “ВС” [Vasily Semenov, Moscow] Moscow, Russia, 1880s Vasily S. Semenov, owner of a silverware factory founded in 1850 in Moscow; in 1873, the factory employed 40 workers; at the beginning of the 20th century, his daughter Maria Vasilyevna continued the business.
