A MEISSEN PORCELAIN FIGURE OF 'TILL EULENSPIEGEL' GERMAN FOLK HERO, 20TH CEN. - A porcelain sculpture of the famous German folk hero 'Till Eulenspiegel' produced by Meissen around the middle of the 20th century. The underside is marked with the Meissen crossed swords in blue ink underglaze above another set of crossed swords cut into the porcelain along with various other incised factory marks. Till Eugenspiegel was a German folk hero of the middle-ages and Renaissance renowned for his comedic adventures where he would play pranks on individuals to expose their vices. He is often depicted with an owl, as seen here, and a mirror. Here he is sat atop a pile of books and is beckoning the viewer closer with his fingers, perhaps intending to play a prank on them.
