Bidspirit auction | A SPANISH TOLEDO GOLD-INLAID STEEL

A SPANISH TOLEDO GOLD-INLAID STEEL CHARGER WITH FIGURAL SCENE, 19TH CENTURY - Spain, Toledo, 19th century. Circular steel charger finely damascened in gold on a blackened ground, the obverse decorated with a central pastoral figural scene depicting six figures in an idealized landscape with distant mountains, trees, and flowering plants, executed in fine linear gold inlay with areas of dense overlay. The scene is framed by a wide ornamental border richly worked with scrolling foliage and winged figures, and roundels incorporating architectural motifs, characteristic of the 19th-century Toledo revival of historic damascening techniques. The charger is raised on three applied ball feet, secured through the body. The verso is silver-plated, showing a smooth reflective surface beneath areas of wear, oxidation, and handling marks, with visible construction details and hammering consistent with decorative workshop production. The overall composition reflects the influence of European neoclassical and genre imagery adapted to traditional Spanish damascened metalwork, intended as an ornamental presentation piece rather than a functional vessel. Dimensions: D: 11 7/8 in., (30.2 cm.) Conditions: Overall good condition. Light scattered surface scratches and minor areas of loss. The blackened ground shows small abrasions and patina consistent with age. The silver-plated reverse exhibits oxidation, light surface scratches. Feet appear original and stable.
