A HAND-CARVED RUSSIAN (SOVIET) GILT SILVER NEPHRITE BOX - Of circular form, the body carved from a single block of deep green nephrite with a smooth, high polish. The domed lid is finely ornamented with applied carved hardstone elements in the form of naturalistic blackcurrant leaves and berries, the leaves delicately veined and slightly translucent at the edges, the berries rendered in dark polished stone with contrasting stems. A small branch element in reddish hardstone provides additional chromatic contrast. The interior is fitted with a gilt silver collar bearing the Soviet assay marks and 875 standard. Produced in a state workshop such as those associated with the former Imperial Peterhof or Ekaterinburg stone-cutting factories. Dimensions: H: 2 1/4 in., D: 3 5/8 in., (H: 5.7 cm., D: 9.2 cm.) Conditions: The stone body in good overall condition with light surface wear and minor abrasions consistent with age. The applied elements intact.
