A CHINESE EXPORT LACQUER AND MOTHER-OF-PEARL INLAID BOX, 19TH CENTURY - Of octagonal canted rectangular form raised on short bracket feet, the exterior is finished in black lacquer and richly inlaid throughout with mother-of-pearl depictions of flowering tree branches inhabited by birds, rendered in an asymmetrical composition characteristic of Chinese export decorative arts of the Qing period. The lid, sides, and borders are further embellished with geometric mother-of-pearl stringing. Fitted with gilt brass carrying handles at the sides and an ornate escutcheon with ring pull to the front. The hinged cover opens to reveal a plain black lacquered interior with traces of original pink fabric lining. The underside is plain. Dimensions: 14 1/2 x 13 x 10 1/2 in., (37 x 35.5 x 27.5 cm.) Conditions: Wear, scattered small losses to lacquer and mother-of-pearl inlay throughout. Surface scratches and small age cracking. Brass mounts with oxidation and wear consistent with age and use.
