A RUSSIAN PARCEL-GILT-SILVER ENGRAVED CHINOISERIE TEA CADDY, 19TH C. - A finely crafted Russian parcel-gilt silver tea caddy of rectangular form with a removable domed stopper and gilt interior. The body is engraved with Japonisme and Chinoiserie decoration, including flowering plants, bamboo fencing, and a seated Oriental figure rendered in a contemplative pose. The figure appears seated upon a tea crate bearing Cyrillic inscriptions, an unusual decorative motif. The removable stopper retains its original cork liner and is gilt on the interior. Both the caddy and stopper bear Russian silver hallmarks. The interior is fully gilt, a feature intended to protect both the silver and the contents from oxidation. Hallmarks: Cyrillic lettres ”IPP”, 84 silver proof, kokoshnik. Weight: 11.4 oz., (311.84 g.) Dimensions: H: 5 in., (12.7 cm.) Conditions: Overall good condition. Surface wear, scratches, tarnish, and minor dents consistent with age and use. The engraved decoration remains clear and well preserved. The gilt interior retains much of its original gilding.
