A FRENCH PORCELAIN ELEPHANT FORM MANTEL CLOCK ON ORMOLU STAND, 18TH CENTURY - A porcelain figure of an elephant modeled standing four-square, the body glazed white and decorated with polychrome enamel reserves depicting figures in the Chinese taste, bordered by iron-red and floral ornament. The animal supports a circular clock case mounted above, enclosed within an elaborate rococo-style ormolu surround with scrolling acanthus and foliate motifs. The base formed as a naturalistic ormolu plinth with asymmetrical Rococo scrollwork. The white enamel dial with Arabic numerals and gilt hands, set within a glazed bezel. The case housing a time-only movement, the rear with winding arbor. France, 18th centiry. Dimensions: H: 8 5/8 in., L: 6 1/2 in., W: 5 3/8 in., (21.9 x 16.5 x 13.7 cm.) Conditions: Overall, good condition. The porcelain has minor wear and light surface abrasions. The ormolu has rubbing, areas of oxidation, and patina to the underside.
