A BRONZE GROUPING OF MERMAIDS BY TAUNI DE LESSEPS, FRENCH-AMERICAN, 1920 - 2001 - An expressive and highly sculptural bronze composition formed as an intertwined circular grouping of two mermaid-like or aquatic female figures, their elongated bodies rendered in a fluid, organic manner characteristic of the artist’s mature modernist style. The composition is conceived as an openwork ring with the figures merging into flowing vegetal and marine-like forms, surmounted by stylized leaves and enclosing a dynamic central negative space. One figure reclines below with curling hair and raised arms, while the opposing figure emerges upward in a sweeping arc, creating a rhythmic circular movement throughout the sculpture. Dimensions: H: 10 1/2 in., (26.7 cm.) Conditions: Overall good condition with naturally varied patina, minor surface wear, scattered oxidation, and areas of dust accumulation within recessed elements.
