A BERNHARD SOPHER (1879-1949) BRONZE, A SEATED NUDE WOMAN, C. 1930 - A bronze by the Syrian-born, German-American sculptor Bernhard Sopher (1879-1949), depicting a nude woman in a crisscross seated position. Sopher was born in Safed, Syria in 1879, moving to Germany by 1897 where he began to attend the Berlin School of Art, then beginning to study under Adolf Brutt at the Weimar School of Craft, likewise in Berlin. He contributed to many monumental works in Germany throughout the early 1900s, in addition to volunteering to join the German Army during WW1, but he was compelled to flee to America by 1934 when the Nazi Regime banned him from working because he was Jewish. He lived out the rest of his days in the United States where he eventually passed in Los Angeles in 1949. Dimensions: H: 9 in., (23 cm.)
