JACQUES LIPCHITZ (1891–1973) SIGNED BRONZE FIGURE OF A RECLINING NUDE, FRANCE, 20TH CENTURY - An abstract sculpture of a reclining nude by Jacques Lipchitz (1891-1973), the famed Lithuanian-born French-American sculptor and pioneer of the cubist movement. The piece is signed by the artist and kept atop a black marble base. Lipchitz was born in Lithuania in the year 1891 to a Litvak family. He studied engineering and art as a young man, and eventually went off to Paris to study at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and the Academie Julian. During World War 2, Jacques, a Jewish man, was forced to flee France and escaped to New York with the help of the American journalist Varian Fry. Dimensions: H (excluding base): 14 in., (35.5 cm.)
