Bidspirit auction | A BRONZE FIGURE OF A

A BRONZE FIGURE OF A FENCER BY HUGO LEDERER, GERMAN, EARLY 20TH CENTURY - Depicting a standing nude fencer holding a foil with the tip resting upon the base, the athlete is shown in a moment of repose with his left hand placed upon his hip and his gaze directed downward. The figure displays the strong anatomical modeling and idealized classical treatment characteristic of the work of Hugo Lederer (1871–1940), one of the leading German sculptors of the early twentieth century. Signed ”H. LEDERER” and inscribed ”Akt des Gladiators Berlin” on the base. The model relates closely to Lederer's celebrated ”Fechter” (Fencer) figure created for the Breslau Fencer Fountain and subsequently issued in reduced bronze versions by the Gladenbeck foundry. Dimensions: H: 21 x 5 x 5 1/2 in., (53.4 x 12.7 x 14 cm.) Conditions: Good overall condition with an even dark brown patina. Minor surface wear, light scratches, and scattered abrasions consistent with age. The foil appears intact and original. Please make all inquiries before bidding.
