A WILLIAM A. LOVEGROVE (1902-1970) ANIMALIER BRONZE COMPOSITION, SIGNED - A bronze grouping by American artist William A. Lovegrove (1902-1970) depicting a gazelle being caught by a leaping lioness as another gazelle narrowly makes their escape. The title of this piece is sometimes given as ”The Law of the Wild”, ”Lioness Attacking Gazelles”, or ”Natural Selection”. The piece is signed on the base by Lovegrove and also bears the 'Susses Freres Ets Paris' foundry mark. Lovegrove was born in New York City in 1902, and went away to Paris to study art at a young age, learning at such institutions as the Ecole Des Beaux-Arts, the Sorbonne, and the Ecole du Louvre. He returned to Paris in during World War 2 as a soldier in the US Military. During his time in Paris he organized the exhibition ”Masterpieces from French Private Collections Recovered in Germany”, featuring artworks recovered by the famous 'Monuments Men' in Nazi Germany, in addition to receiving the Legion of Honor for his efforts. He eventually became the Head of Museums and Libraries for the Allied Military Government in Stuttgart from 1948-1949, then a memver of the United States Information Agency as a cultural attache in Germany.
