A CHRISTOPHER FRATIN (1801-1864) SIGNED BRONZE WOMAN WITH BIRD, 1849 - A finely detailed bronze by French sculptor Christopher Fratin (1801-1864) depicting a young woman seated by a pond, holding open the front of her dress to allow a bird to sit close to her breast. The piece is signed 'FRATIN' and dated '1849' towards the bottom. Christopher Fratin was a famous French artist most well-known for his brilliantly detailed animalier sculptures. The son of a taxidermist, he was very familiar with the forms and shapes of many animals from a young age. He was a frequent exhibitor at the Salon de Paris, and his works remain on display in many great institutions, including the Louvre. Of note for our New York based clientele is his sculpture 'Eagles and Prey', which was erected in Central Park in 1860 and still stands today. France, 1849. Dimensions: H: 9 3/4 in., (24.8 cm.)
