A WATERCOLOR AND PASTEL LANDSCAPE BY MSTISLAV DOBUZHINSKY (1875–1957), DATED 1901 - Watercolor and pastel on paper, signed and dated lower left ”1901 M.D.” A lyrical early landscape by Mstislav Dobuzhinsky, executed in 1901—a period corresponding to the artist’s formative Munich years and his growing interest in symbolic, atmospheric depictions of nature. The composition presents a rolling hillside under a soft yellow sky, with haystacks in the foreground and rhythmic, almost calligraphic lines describing the forms of trees and fields. The color palette greens, ochres, and muted violets—is characteristic of Dobuzhinsky’s early graphic manner prior to his mature urban Expressionist period. The sheet is delicately worked in watercolor and pastel, blended to create a misty, layered tonality. Works from this date are extremely scarce, as the majority of Dobuzhinsky’s known graphic output from 1899–1903 is held in Russian museum collections or descended in artist-associated archives. The verso bears a contemporary inscription in Russian identifying the artist and date. Dobuzhinsky’s early landscapes relate closely to the studies noted in Christie’s London, Important Russian Pictures, 28 November 2007 (lots 413–415), which included early works from 1898–1902, valued for their rarity and documentary significance. Dimensions: 10 1/4 x 13 3/8 in., (26.7 x 34 cm.) Conditions: Generally very good. Minor toning to paper. A few small spotting marks visible on the mat only. Colors remain strong and unfaded.
