A RUSSIAN SILVER AND CLOISONNE ENAMEL ICON OF ST. NICHOLAS, 19 C. - The rectangular icon depicting Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker is shown half-length, blessing with his right hand and holding an open Gospel in his left. The saint is portrayed with a high forehead and a short white beard, wearing episcopal vestments decorated with crosses. The surrounding silver riza is richly adorned with cloisonne enamel ornament in shades of pale green, turquoise, white, and pink, arranged in stylized foliate and geometric motifs radiating around the halo. The icon is mounted within a molded gilt-metal protective frame with scalloped edges and hinged side clasps. The background and borders are finely chased with ornamental patterns typical of Russian devotional icons of the late Imperial period. Dimensions: 5 3/4 x 5 3/4 in., (13.7 x 13.7 cm.) including a box Conditions: The icon in overall good condition with light wear consistent with age. Minor surface abrasions to the metal frame and slight rubbing to the gilded surface. The cloisonne enamel decoration appears well preserved with no significant losses observed.
