AN OIL ON CANVAS PORTRAIT OF A MAN, THE BORIS GRIGORIEV SCHOOL, RUSSIAN - An expressionist portrait depicting a solemn gentleman dressed in a dark coat, white shirt, and black cravat against a subdued brown background. The sitter is rendered with elongated facial features, deeply set eyes, and pronounced angular modeling, creating an image of psychological intensity and introspective character. The stylized treatment of the face, together with the exaggerated physiognomy and sculptural handling of form, recalls the portraiture of Boris Dmitrievich Grigoriev (1886-1939), one of the most distinctive figures of Russian modernism. The simplified forms, decorative linearity, and heightened emotional presence reflect the influence of Russian Expressionism and the artist's engagement with the visual language associated with Grigoriev's celebrated portrait studies and character types of the 1920s and 1930s. The reverse reveals an old canvas support with evidence of restoration, including a patch repair visible through the canvas. An old gallery label from The House of Heydenryk, New York, is affixed to the frame, indicating the painting passed through a respected American framing and restoration establishment. A handwritten inventory tag attached to the reverse identifies the work as ”Circle of Boris Grigoriev (1886-1939), Russian, Portrait of a Man.” Dimensions: 26 x 24 in., (66 x 61 cm.) Conditions: Visible patch repair to the reverse. Surface wear, craquelure, scattered restorations, and minor abrasions are consistent with age.
